Buzzbaits, or buzz baits, are excellent top water lures for black bass. These baits come in two sizes and numerous colors from most manufactures. They are made by numerous bait manufactures (Lunker Lure, Zorro, Strike King, Booyah, etc.). For best results, I suggest you modify them before using.
Bait Modification: The buzzbait need to be modified for better results. The goal is to enlarge the hole in the blade, whereas it makes more noise and a grinding sound.
Take the bait from its package or box and bend the shaft in front of the blade. Remove the blade and enlarge the hole by 1/32 of an inch, using the next size drill bit. Drill both ends. Place the blade back on the shaft and bend the end down.
If you do not have access to a drill motor or bit, take the buzzbait and hold it against you're outside mirror, while gong on your next fishing trip. Traveling at fifty-five miles per hour will enlarge the hole. Make sure that you hold the bait just ahead of the hook. It should not take over five minutes to achieve the desired results.
Rigging: Tie the bait directly onto your fishing line. You can use a trailer hook if desired or if the bass hit short.
Method: Cast the bait and be ready to start the blade motion the instant it hits the water. The faster you get the bait on top of the water, the sooner it will start to work. You can dis-engage the free motion of the reel spool just before the bait hits the water. It will not hurt you reel. Your retrieve speed depends on the water movement. A slight chop on the water is a plus. Retrieve into the chop if possible.
As with any top water bait, they should be used early in the morning before dawn on a clear day, until the sun gets to the treetops. If the day is overcast they can be used later. Just before dark when the tree shadows lay across the water, until you stop fishing at night.
Until the next time, have a good day and great fishing.
