Getting kids interested in fishing can be very rewarding or a total failure. Think of the joy for dads or mentors when it works. So keep it simple and take them fishing for bluegills sunfish. Remember that a child can get board very easy, but the auction will keep them coming back again and again. The small sunfish thrive in virtually every freshwater pond, stream and any lake capable of supporting life. Water clarity is not a critical factor.
Rigging: Use a cane pole or a trouble-free spincast rod and reel. The small hook should be a single J-type # 8 or 10 and a small plastic float cork. Under calm conditions, no lead weight is necessary or desirable, but one can be used necessary. Use a small slip shoot above the cork.
Bait: Use live mealworm, crickets or night crawlers. If the child is squeamish about threading live bait on a hook, Do it for them, until they become comfortable, or a piece of lunchmeat or uncooked bacon will draw bites.
Method: Fish weed-bed or grass pockets, lay-downs, brush off the bank, or along pier pilings. Fishing depth probably will not be over 2' max.
I hope this information, will help the child and you have many enjoyable fishing trips. Remember do not over due it, make your trips short, not full days unless you are camping. Until the next time, have a good day and great fishing.
